How would I apply for a new job within my IT department?
A Server-Side Administrator position has opened up in my department (IT). I’ve been with this department for a year now as an IT field tech, but I don’t meet a lot of the formal qualifications the new job asks for (MCSE, Windows 2003 Administration). However, I have enough experience — both with the people in the department and the customer base we service to have some kind of seniority towards the new job. How do I express my interest in the job without having my lack of qualifications hindering my chances of landing it?
Don’t apply unless you are qualified. Why would anyone give you a job that you cannot do?
If you are qualified, but are concerned that your resume doesn’t tell the complete story, then start out by letting your manager and the hiring manager know.
1) Tell your boss you want the job and need support
2) Contact the hiring manager directly and say you want the job
3) Contact your HR rep and follow the instructions for an internal transfer
Get your story straight. You need to explain exactly why you are the best person for the job. This has nothing to do with your wants & desires, or history with the company.
Good luck!
