Before I accept a new job offer I just want to double check and make sure that I am getting what I should get. Other than salary I’m thinking I should get health insurance, dental, 401 k, vacation, sick, and personal days. Am I leaving anything out?

I guess it depends on what job you get…But I wouldn’t know hon.

For the last year and a half I have been working as a 1099 contractor and was unable to attain a mortgage based on that income. In December, I will be completing a Masters degree and beginning a new, steady job. How long before my income is stable enough to qualify for a mortgage? Is there any advantage to waiting longer before applying?

Mortgage lenders generally want to see 3 years track record on the job. It appears either your 1099 income was inadequate, or else your bookkeeping was. Make sure you can document that income and taxes (your tax returns, bank statements) for this year while you finish masters. If you can do that, then you might be able to qualify for mortgage with just 2 yrs on new job.

BTW, this puts you in the house buyers market in 2013, which some economists project will be about the bottom of the housing market - i.e. good time to buy! The number of foreclosures is rising again, which pressures prices. Actually, you really do not want to buy quite yet, unless you have plenty of cash down payment and are concerned about protecting that cash from the prospects of inflation and higher interest rates. If you had loads of cash, at least 20-25% down (plus closing costs, plus 3-6 months of reserves), then you would want your cash in "bricks & mortar."

Make an impression on employers when you apply for a job in construction - for all the right reasons. Applying for a construction job is not rocket science, but there are several pitfalls to avoid.

This guide to compiling a cover letter and completing your CV should serve to keep you on the right track when applying for construction jobs. Good luck!

Writing the cover letter

Your cover letter should be neither too long or too short when you are applying for a construction job. The first sentence should be punchy, attention-grabbing and make the recipient want to read on.

From there, elaborate on the skills, abilities and experience that you have which are required for the construction job in question and explain why you have applied to this particular company. This to-the-point letter should contain only relevant information and cover no more than one side of A4. Your CV is the place where to provide additional details.

Never simply mass-produce your cover letter as it is obvious when you have not tailored your cover letter to the role and company, and this will do little to impress the reader. Finish the letter politely and strongly, inviting the employer to contact you and saying that you look forward to hearing from them.

That’s the cover letter dealt with, so now let’s look at your CV and how it can deployed to aid your search for a construction job.

How to write an effective CV

If you do not currently have an up-to-date CV, don’t panic - creating one is a simple enough process that can greatly enhance your career prospects. Here are a few things to bear in mind when compiling a new CV.

Simplicity is your friend
Do not over complicate your CV. Keep it short, to the point and punchy. Emphasise your strengths and qualifications, and write in plain English.

Work chronologically
The education and employment sections of your CV should start with your most recent experiences and work backwards. If this is your first job, then list any experience of working in the construction industry.

Honesty is the best policy
An interview situation will most likely see you caught in any lies you spin - remember that employers can check many of the details you provide.

Qualifications
If you have specific construction qualifications, make sure these are clearly highlighted in the CV and make sure that those most relevant are listed first.

Style
Do not squash everything together on one page. Make sure that your CV is aesthetically appealing, stylistically consistent and that all spelling and grammar are correct. Ask someone to check it for you before sending it off.

I just started a new waitress’s job and the three waitress’s that have work there are cruel and unfriendly. This happened at my last job and I eventually quit. How do I deal with this type of situation? It apparently happens no matter where you work.

the reason they’re like that is because your coming in to take their "money" HA. also because it’s their territory . i would just ignore them and be the better person, make your tips. if they don’t stop and you’re brave enough say to them "i’m sorry that you don’t want me here but i’m a very nice person can you give me a chance" if they are not complete jerks they’ll listen to you (: i really hope i help. this happened to me a few months back i work for an ice cream place.

I am currently unhappy with my current job so I’m looking to get a new job. Should I quit my job now or wait until I find a new job? Should I just say I quit and walk out of my current job. Should I tell them in advance that I am going to quit. How much ahead of time should I tell them about me quitting.

I would not quit until I had a new job. Tell the new employer you need to give 2 weeks notice to your current employer, and that you will be available to start then. When you give notice, don’t be surprised if your current employer tells you to leave immediately.

I recently got a job at McDonalds, but I haven’t heard from my new manager since I last spoke to her (last thursday) at my orientation when we filled out all the forms. She said someone would call me to let me know when to come in for training, but its been over a week, should I just call? I don’t wanna seem pushy or anything.

yes call and yes you want to be pushy , you want to work and make some money!

bug her every day until you get to work , and then go to work every time you get a chance , never miss , don’t cause any trouble , this is how you get ahead in life , this is the beginning right now

I have a second interview scheduled for a job I really want this week. I have planned to take a vacation in a month. Should I bring this up during my interview or should I wait and see if I am first offered the job and then tell the company? What is the best policy for letting a new employer know about a prior engagement?

I would let them know when they offer you the job. Most companies are pretty flexible about this sort of thing.
