everyone says ooh rescesion bad no jobs but my dopey mates are always getting jobs and getting fired the only people i know without a job are people who dont wanna work and wont take minimum wage jobs

does the ,media over react to the economy?
im 18 and have a min wage job xD

Who are your "dopey mates"? How old are you? How many people do you know who can support a family of 6 on a minimum wage job?

There are lots of reasons that your friends may be able to get (and lose) minimum wage jobs:
1. They are young. Retail stores in particular are more willing to hire impressionable teens who are likely to not know their rights and can be taken advantage of. How many 40-year-old men do you see working in H&M? Not many? Well that’s because they can’t get hired there.

2. They are able-bodied. Lots of minimum-wage jobs (construction worker, for example) are only available to people who are able-bodied.

3. They don’t have a lot of education. It’s really difficult for people who are highly-educated and have a history of well-paid jobs to get hired for a min. wage job. You’d be surprised at how hard it is, in fact. Employers prefer people who aren’t educated enough to know their rights and they don’t want employees who are going to be continuing to look for a better job elsewhere.

4. They don’t need benefits. A lot of minimum wage jobs are only part-time so that they don’t have to offer you benefits. If you aren’t a teenager and you really do need healthcare, you can’t depend on a min. wage job. All your wages will go toward paying for your health insurance — or paying for your medical bills.

5. They don’t have mouths to feed or mortgages to pay. When you have to support a family or make payments on your house, it simply won’t work for you to take a low-paying job. You’ll end up starving your kids or going into foreclosure. A lot of people made decisions (about having kids, about buying a house) before the recession hit and they lost their jobs. They can’t sell their house because they can’t find anyone to buy it for what it’s worth (causing them to have to pay a huge sum of money simply to get the house off of their hands) and they can’t starve their kids. So they have to find a good job — not a minimum wage job — to pay the bills. And since they ultimately will want a better job, no employer is going to hire them for a minimum wage job because (see #3) the employer thinks they won’t stick around for very long.

The media does not over-react to the economy.

What exactly would I be getting myself into if I decide to get a BA in Media Advertising? I’m stuck between either Multimedia Journalism or Media Advertising, but now that I think more about it I’m not really into Journalism all that much…

Thanks everyone for your help..

Geeze wats up with all the spam!

Rots a ruck. Newspapers, the traditional way to get started in journalism, are laying off staff faster than they can print a paper. Magazine jobs are always glutted with applicants - this is a "glamour" occupation which means no jobs, no money, unpaid internships for a year or two doing scutwork, then they dump you. Unless you have connections, a record of publications, etc, you are going nowhere with this. You have to really love to write. You have to know grammar, spelling, proofreading, editing, etc, and you have to know something you can write about AS AN EXPERT. A journalism degree is not much good unless you have a good undergrad degree in something, then masters from a top J-school.

Advertising? Another glamour occupation always glutted with jobseekers and no jobs. The economy stinks, the job market stinks, and advertising is pretty much down the toilet.

If you aren’t all that keen on the field to begin with, you will never be happy, even if you could by some miracle land a job someday. What are you writing? You’re not? Then neither of these is a suitable choice for you.

i am thinking of studying Media Studies at college.
But i was wondering what kind of jobs you can get from it?
give me some suggestions/ideas please, i would be very grateful.

You are very intelligent to ask. This major often does not lead to a job. As a whole, the field of journalism, both in print and in other media is contracting due to the internet and corporate consolidation. There are too many experienced people who have been laid off for the job market to be a good one for new graduates.

One thing I have to admit is working in the entertainment industry whether it is television, radio, design, magazines, etc. There are tons of diverse career opportunities that can be pursued. In this field you can be a web designer for their online version of the magazine/ graphic designer. There’s editor someone who proof reads all of the articles before they are finally put in the magazine, and there is also page design/cover design this requires you to be very well versed in computer photoshop software and design. It all depends on what you want to do, because in an industry like this, it’s always good to start out as a personal assistant and work you way up. I did it and I never regretted it at all.

GOOD LUCK

There is hardly any mention of the dramatic unemployment in this country on the news/media.
In my area, it is an epidemic. There are many people out of work and nothing is being done to create or bring industry back to the US. Why is this not being discussed ????!

It is a sad and bad trend. Some media barons are venturing out as politicians instead of reporting as it happens!

Ok so 290.000 jobs were gained in April. But 66,000 of those are temporary census workers. They will lose their jobs when the job is done. Jobs lost in April was 38,326. So In reality since the census workers are only temporary and the jobs lost in april, we only had a Gain of 185,674. Why is this never mentioned??
@Easter Bunny

The unemployment rate going up to 9.9% is hardly good news.

At the rate of 185,674 it will take over 8 years just to get back to the pre crisis unemployment level. That figure is good news, but is abyssmal looking at an eight year recovery=(
