It may have once been the case that landing a construction job was as simple as turning up at a building site and asking to speak to the foreman, but not any more. These days, it is necessary to prove to employers that you are qualified, able and keen to carry out each particular role.

This might require you to register with job agencies, utilise new technology such as recruitment websites or to otherwise think outside the box. Creating an impressive CV is always a good place to start your search for jobs.

Don’t have an up-to-date CV? We’ve got some tips to help you get your CV right and land that job in construction.

Structuring your CV

Write down a list of your competencies, skills and experiences so you have something to work from. Try to pinpoint the areas that make you stand out from others as well as features that recruiters look for when filling construction vacancies.

The structure of your CV should follow a fairly standard order and include the following sections:

* Personal Details.

* Work Experience.

* Achievements.

* Education and Qualifications.

* Extra-Curricular Activities.

* General Skills.

* References.

This structure makes it easy for the recruiter to locate relevant information and identify whether you are suitable for the job. This is only half the battle though - your CV must also be clear, logical, concise and free of mistakes.

Applying for construction jobs? Present the perfect CV

A well-presented CV can make the difference between creating the right impression on the reader, thus getting you a new job in construction, and it landing in the bin. Everybody writes their CV in their own way, but there are a few points regarding presentation that should be universally adhered to.

Each section must be clearly headed to make the CV easy to read and pleasing on the eye. Make sure these headings and sub-headings follow a consistent size and font, and justify your CV to the left so that each paragraph is neat and tidy. Ensure the space between each line is consistent throughout.

Bullet points are useful way of breaking up large chunks of text, and you must remember to do a spellcheck on your CV. Read it through several times to make sure there are no grammatical errors. With this in mind, ask a friend or colleague to look over it for you.

Omit information not relevant to the job you are going for and write in the third person throughout the document. Make sure that the content you put in is relevant to the construction job you are applying for and remember that lying is more likely to see you get caught out rather than get a job.

Your CV can help to create a very good impression and make a significant difference to your chances of finding a new construction job.

Have you recently been laid off, or are you thinking about embarking on a new career in construction? If so, you may be wondering what your options are, and how you should go about finding a new construction job.

The following advice is intended to help anyone in their quest to find a construction job by making their search as wide-reaching and effective as possible.

Exhaust all possible sources

There are many avenues open to you as you search for a construction job, and you should make use of all of them. These include construction job boards, recruitment agencies, and career fairs. You should also try contacting companies directly to see if they have any suitable construction vacancies.

There are various factors that you should take into consideration when looking for a new job in construction.

CV and cover letter
Employers will form a first impression of you based on the CV, cover letter or application form that you send them. Spend time researching and putting the relevant information together. Your CV and cover letter should be professional looking and be tailored to the specific company and job role rather than mass produced.

Consider your options
If possible, don’t accept the first construction job you are offered. Think over your options to make sure you are making the right decision.

Don’t quit on a whim
Make sure you have something else arranged to move onto before quitting your current construction job.

Prepare and practise
Prior to an interview for a construction job, spend some time preparing and practising the answers to likely questions. Ensure you can sell yourself without appearing arrogant.

Learn from others
Seek advice and guidance from others and do some research on the Internet to help you when you are looking for a construction job.

Network your way to a new construction job

Networking is one of the most effective methods of creating new opportunities. Build contacts with employers, colleagues and clients - you never know when you might need be able to use them. To this end, it is best to keep in touch with as many people as possible as your life, and career, progresses.

Never be afraid to ask family, friends and friends of family friends for help if they are in a position to give it. Networking is not a one-off deal, but as long as you work to maintain healthy relationships, people will generally be happy to help in any way they can.

I try to recruit chemists and engineers to work in the R&D of the company I work for

It’s never always clear how to start searching for a job, I was in a bit of a rut for the last month when I was job searching, until I uncovered the site in the box below that has sensible guidance. I soon got myself going down the true way, and in a month or so after a few interviews I netted a really great job.
