Many higher ranked colleges do not offer SE as a major and opt for computer science and computer engineering. I want to work at google and there they usually only take people from the best schools. So, can I choose another major that would land me the same job and teach me essentially the same things or must I go to MSOE instead of U of I.

You could look at similar concentrations like Information Technology or Information Systems. One of these variations should be offered by the university you plan to get into.

Some of the students secure poor results in higher secondary(less then 50% in PCM), and they are admitted to engineering college by giving donation. Can they will get a better job later if they can secure first class in engineering line? Later in the interview for the job, will there higher secondary marks will be seen?

No one ever asked my grade results from high school. I was actually very proud that I was in the top 10 of my high school, but it never came up when i was job hunting.

That was because the interviewers see a lot of people and they don’t have time to go over the whole life story of someone in the time they have to see each applicant.

I am an engineer and most often interviewers want to know about the most recent history. So when I was a graduate from engineering school, they were most interested in my grades from engineering school. I ordered transcripts of my engineering school results and included them with my application letters when I was looking for employment immediately after graduation.

Now that I have been working a few years, employers want to know about my recent job experience with previous employers, and few or zero questions are asked about my education. My university degree and my specialty are on my resume, so that information is checked before the interview is granted.

In north america the first three months of an engineering job are usually probationary. That is, the employer is never sure that an engineer is good, even if they have excellent academic results. I have been in a position of interviewing and recommending engineering contractors with the goal of finding permanent employees. Candidates from engineering school have a lot more to learn on the job, about how engineering projects get done. A lot of problems have to be solved. Also, communication and team work are very important. I had to recommend to let some smart people be fired after the 3 month probation, because they had a wrong idea of what their job purpose was, or for some other reason just were not fitting in and getting results.

If you are having poor results in school, then make sure that you are really an "engineer". That means, you have to have the ingenuity to solve technical problems and get solutions built. You cannot know everything about how to solve complex problems. You will have to work in a team with some people who are experienced and some people who are learning.

What most impressed me on interviews, was people that in school or on their own, did technical projects. Sometimes people brought their design documents or even their prototyptes, to show me what kind of learning projects they did.

First and foremost it must be remembered that Continental Airlines is a “Service Company” as opposed to a Manufacturing Company.

The primary difference between the two is that in a manufacturing company, the customer interface with the employees is not as constant as it is the service industry especially in the airline business where the contact is constant for a very short intense period, followed by a series of such contacts with very short intense periods.

Right from the time a customer books a ticket on Continental Airlines, which may be real time face to face, or booking a ticket at the window, which is real time face to face, and joining the queue at checking in at the port, there is constant interface with the employees of the Airline. Thus, every employee who sports the badge of Continental Airlines is expected to know everything about the flight, other information, and also act as an Ambassador of the Airline and have the customer taken to the right person at the right time. You cannot say, this is not my job. Even if the passenger is for another airline, and needs help, Continental employees are encouraged to help them. That’s called scoring brownie points.

Every employee right from the senior most person at the airport to the juniormost, is THE true face of Continental Airlines in a dynamic realtime, online system of work.

Obviously then, the prescreening process of Continental Airlines is tough and demanding. The focus on pre employment screening is not only just about how much you have learnt, but how much is the value that you put on your human interface.

In a real time, on line function, which is not describable, your human interface, quick thinking, and ability to come up with solutions to help customers, and thus help Continental Airlines to not only maintain, but also increase its high standards of customer service is paramount.

Continental believes that a single unsatisfied customer draws away at least 50 potential customers from it; conversely, a satisfied customer may bring in 10. So it is important to focus all the time on quality, speed and efficiency of service to keep the ratio of dissatisfied customers to satisfied customers low. And the bar is being lowered every day, every month, every year.

Successful applicants can get a rewarding and satisfying career, open up new horizons for each to succeed, even while working as a team to deliver ontime real time online best customer services. There is a tremendous need for diverse skills in each position. It cannot be said I don’t know this; you must have the panache to know, to enquire, and to learn. And be ready to face crises with equanimity, while maintaining dignity and decorum.

Continental Airlines recognizes very well that its success in a highly scalable, competitive, and cost conscious environment is entirely due ONLY becuase of its workforce. Planes do not fly by themselves. You need pilots, you need ground staff to prepare the aircraft, you need checking staff, you need security staff, you need stewards, and stewardesses to comfortably transport their passengers in comfort and with safety.

To achieve these pre-requisites which will help you later to organise your life in a culturally rich, stimulating, and constantly changing exciting environment, with inbuilt training modules for specializing in the different niche areas of customer service, you would be adding to your learning, and as they say, your travels will widen the horizons of your mind.

Since primarily you will be handling face to face interface with customers, potential customers, and other providers of services to Continental, and also professionally interact with other airlines, you must submit your current resume; it can based on functional format or in reverse chronological order. We would like to learn your objectives, both short term and long term, which should be able to make the appraiser get a quick idea of your grasp of the subject, the manner and method of presentation; in other words, it must be so structured and written in a manner that would attract the interest of the reader, who will appraise you for the positions in the company.

That appraiser would judge whether you are a real pro already, or whether you have the potential that training could turn you into a tangible worthwhile asset for the company.

Unlike jobs where the cloth is cut to measure up to the candidate, the company here moulds the chosen to suit the position. Since it will be spending considerable time and money on training, it has to make sure that the investment is worthwhile.

For that you need to specify your work experience if any, in the background of the skils you have earned after your education, both in the arts and the technical disciplines. When looking at your profile, you will be guaged on how much you built up yourself to the job, and how much further you went to meet your own targets, forgetting for the moment your employer’s targets. Do attach proofs.

There are, as we have mentioned through this article, positions which include Ramp agents, Boarding Agent positions, flight attendants, pilots, engineering, and maintenance, help desks, luggage trackers.. that offer a challenging, growing, rewarding career. You will be constantly appraised, and it is certain that if you possess the necessary will and momentum, you can scale the ladder faster.

As we said, in the service industry, the focus is on people. If you grow, the company grows, and if the team grows, the company grows, and if the company grows, you grow too. Once you pass the initial screening, your application is moved up the structured ladder of recruitment, where again you would be expected to measure up to their expectations. Continental Airlines will conduct background checks on the basis of you have provided, and through its own resources as well. There will be medical screening, drugs tests, and other medical and paramedical tests through which you will have to pass.

Welcome to Continental Airlines!

Mesothelioma is a medical term refers to the development of cancer cells in the mesothelial tissue due to inhalation of asbestos fibers. This is a severe form of cancer that can be caused uniquely by asbestos fibers. Depending on the organ affected and its severity, mesothelioma is classified in:

- Pleural Mesothelioma , which affect the pleural cavity , thin layer of tissue covering the lungs

- Peritoneal Mesothelioma , affecting the peritoneum, tissue that lines the abdominal and pelvic cavities;

- Benign Mesothelioma , the less severe of mesothelioma characterized by occurrence of noncancerous tumor cells in the pleura.

Although severe, mesothelioma is still a rare type of cancer. About one person in a million is affected. In 2004, it was estimated that around 15 individuals to 1,000,000 were victim of the disease in the United States. No one knows for sure the percentage of this year, 2008, since the number is increasing. However, about 200,000 individuals die each year from cancers causing by carcinogenic workplaces, including job sites containing asbestos fibers, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Are the causes of mesothelioma are well known?

Yes. Whether it is pleural, peritoneal, or benign mesothelioma, it is caused by exposure to asbestos, an airborne mineral made of microscopic bundles of fibers according to US Environmental Protection Agency. Once enters your lungs, asbestos damage silently the tissue affected. The damaging effects can continue for years without any obvious medical signs. Usually, you start seeing or feeling symptoms 20 to 30 years after you were exposed to the pathogenic fiber.

Where asbestosis can be found?

In rare cases, you can be affected indirectly by asbestos contamination through your friends or family members who brought the fiber to the house from work in their clothes, hair or on their skin. However, the inhalation is, most of the times, the result of direct contact to the fiber in workplaces. Companies that are susceptible to have asbestos include:

* Extraction units: mines for instance

* Industries that manufacture asbestos products: textiles, friction products, insulation, certain building materials, etc.

* Places where asbestos is used as protection against heat

* Certain industries that specialize in shipbuilding, steel, foundry, glass manufacturing, etc.

* Construction industry, during renovation or demolition, or particularly during removal of asbestos, according to U.S. Department of Labor

What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is often considered a silent killer because it is completely asymptomatic at early stage. When they finally emerge, symptoms are not specific and are similar to other respiratory diseases and digestive tract infection, which makes the diagnosis difficult.

The most common symptoms of mesothelioma include abdominal pain and swelling, nausea or vomiting, intestinal obstruction and unreasonable weight loss. As the disease progresses, you may have other medical symptoms such as pleural effusion (accumulation of excess fluid in your pleural cavity).

Is there any treatment or vaccine against mesothelioma?

So far, there is no preventive vaccine against mesothelioma. However, there are therapies your physician may consider to treat your mesothelioma to help you cope with the disease. Earlier you have the treatment, better chance you have to be recovered. If you suspect you or a family member was exposed to asbestos, it is vital that you see a health care provider for early diagnosis; do not wait for symptoms.

Conventionally, mesothelioma is treated by surgery, chemotherapy or/and radiotherapy. Because mesothelioma is a life-threatening illness, you should thoroughly discuss each option with your physician before deciding a treatment. Make sure you have information about risk factors of the surgery; potential side effects of the chemotherapy and radiotherapy. You can also ask question about the prognosis; although mesothelioma prognosis is often heart breaking.

In case the diagnosis reveals you have mesothelioma, can you be compensated?

Yes. It is illegal in the United States to use asbestos in any industry. “The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) set a maximum exposure limit and include provisions for engineering controls and respirators, protective clothing, exposure monitoring, hygiene facilities and practices, warning signs, labeling, recordkeeping, and medical exams.” If due negligence, these requirement are not met in a company, and you become a victim of mesothelioma, you need to contact a lawyer for compensation.

Selecting a lawyer to represent your case should not be a negligible decision. You need an experienced mesothelioma attorney, one who has a record in helping asbestos cancer victims, who can help you get the financial compensation you disserve.

However, your health is worth more than silver and gold. The wise thing to do is avoid exposure or inhalation of asbestos.

Is there a center of support for mesothelioma victims?

Yes. In the United States, there are many groups and centers for mesothelioma Victims. In addition, there are qualified attorneys who can fight to help you receive the highest mesothelioma award. Do not deal with a so-called attorney who will refer you to another law firm; contact your attorney directly to discuss your case. To learn more, visit of mesothelioma

Recently, Job Outlook conducted a survey, which revealed the fact that for a third year in succession, the demand for fresh graduates is on the rise. Owners of enterprises hired more fresh graduates in 2006 than they did in 2005. In addition, they have offered higher wages, benefits, and perks.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employer’s annual survey, nine companies out of ten describe the current job market situation for young graduates as excellent, good or very good. Graduates are believed to have a brighter future in consulting, public accounting, construction, and engineering firms.

There are two major reasons for this recent trend; first, companies have to find someone to replace their retired HR staff and second, the number of products and services that these companies offer are on the rise.

All graduates in the field of mechanical engineering, accounting, economics and finance, information sciences and systems, computer engineering, electrical engineering, business administration and management, computer science, market and marketing management, and chemical engineering are in great demand.

Graduates in the subject of mechanical engineering head the list of graduates in great demand. Reputed aerospace, mechanical equipment, and automative companies prefer to hire them.

Banking, financial, transportation, and insurance services seek to employ economics and finance graduates. Food and beverage processing companies, financial services, and merchandisers want to hire business administration and management degree holders. About a third of business enterprises plan to hire associate graduates in technology, business, and engineering.
Engineering/surveying companies and insurance are in need of graduates who have a technical knowledge and, therefore, don’t require training in that field. Employers have observed that such graduates have an excellent work ethics and professionalism that was lacking in previous amateurs.

Only around 23.5% of the respondents, most of them being manufacturers, planned to hire international graduates in 2006.

Qualities Required in a New Graduate

Employers seek to employ fresh graduate who have:

Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written
Honesty and integrity
Ability to relate with others
Good work ethics
Ability to work in a team
Analytical skills
Self-motivation and initiative
Ability to adapt to changes
Up-to-date computer skills
Eye for details

Attractive Features of the Jobs for Fresh Graduates

The expectations and standards of companies have rocketed in the past year. It is important for new graduates to show good GPAs because full-time jobs are associated with high salaries, benefits, and perks.

Here are a list of benefits that come with the jobs:
Life and medical/dental insurance
Retirement benefits
Semi-annual and annual raises
Counseling programs for employees
Dress codes
Paid training
Commissions and bonus
Family benefits
Flexi-time
Performance updates
Sick leaves and vacations
Recreational and on-site fitness facilities
Day-care center
Company service/car

Campus job fairs, student clubs and organizations, on-the-job trainings, Internet job search engines, and so on provide ample opportunities for prospective employers and employees to meet.

Remember to target the right companies for you. Don’t let any opportunity slip between your fingers. Before you attend any interview, research the company well. During the interview find out more about the nature of the career that the company offers. Your career objective should be crystal clear, and you should know exactly what you want out of your career.

I’m going to an engineering job fair at my school. I have a general cover letter, but I was wondering if I should bring it to the job fair. Most of the companies have so many people coming that I doubt they will have time (or want to) actually read a cover letter.

Should I give them my resume and cover letter when they ask for my resume or just give them my resume only?

Just give them your resume - cover letters should really be personalized to each employer - it shows you care and have actually invested time in pursuing the employer.

I have an entry level separation from the national guard when I was 18 and heard that because of that I would never be able to get a "government job". Would this prevent me from getting a civil engineering job even if I had an engineering degree? I never even went to basic training and its not a dishonorable discharge just an entry level separation

No. They tell you stuff like that to try to scare you. I am Electrical Engineer and have been out of the military for 12 years. Not once has anyone asked to see my DD214.

I doubt that the government would turn you down for an ELS. You can see the military and make your own call at;
